This is an acrylic painting I submitted for Istanbul Center's art and essay contest. I recently found out that I won and I am CRAZY EXCITED because the prize is a TRIP TO TURKEY THIS SUMMER
The prompt was the impact of social media on communication. My idea was basically that social media brings us closer to friends who live far away from us, but it can also distance us from people in our immediate vicinity. So I painted an American boy and an Indian girl texting to show the part about connecting with far-away friends, but I painted their surroundings in grayscale to show that both texters were ignoring the people around them. The contest was actually a few months ago, but I though I shouldn't post the art anywhere because one of their conditions was that all entries be unpublished, and I wanted to play it safe. But now that the judging is over, I think it's okay to put it on DA.
